Jeff Buckley doing Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah. I listened to this song, on repeat, for five hours straight, one day years ago. It's simply addictive, touching something deep inside. Too bad both Tim and Jeff, father and son, died so young.
"Sometimes you do it to save your own life, not anybody else's. That's mostly why I write. I'm not trying to change anybody else's life or the world; I'm trying to keep from blowing my own brains out. That's the real point." -- Guy Clark

Johnny Cash covers Hurt by Trent Reznor - I find both the original by Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails and this version to be deeply moving. The difference in age between Reznor and Johnny Cash gives the song a different meaning. Reznor, a heroin addict sang about his desire to escape from reality while when Cash sings the song you get the sense of a dying man coming to terms with the fact that the end is near.

Dermot, this was a great idea for a topic! So many great songs...
tcm2164 ,
Adding the comparison of the two version of "Hurt" was a nice touch!

Nothing Compares 2 U
The song was originally written by Prince and released in 1985, however Sinead O'Connor's cover from 1989 is more soulful and much better known than the original.

Re: Cover versions of favourite songs
"Dance Me to the End of Love" is Cohen's song from 1984.
Leonard Cohen said...
'Dance Me to the End Of Love' ... it's curious how songs begin because the origin of the song, every song, has a kind of grain or seed that somebody hands you or the world hands you and that's why the process is so mysterious about writing a song. But that came from just hearing or reading or knowing that in the death camps, beside the crematoria, in certain of the death camps, a string quartet was pressed into performance while this horror was going on, those were the people whose fate was this horror also. And they would be playing classical music while their fellow prisoners were being killed and burnt. So, that music, "Dance me to your beauty with a burning violin," meaning the beauty there of being the consummation of life, the end of this existence and of the passionate element in that consummation. But, it is the same language that we use for surrender to the beloved, so that the song — it's not important that anybody knows the genesis of it, because if the language comes from that passionate resource, it will be able to embrace all passionate activity.
Dance Me To The End Of Love, here covered by Kate Gibson.
And yes, I first heard it in the movie "Strange Days".
"Whether You believe you can, or you can't, you are right."
