You're right Dermot there is no real choice - except for positive thinking. That in itself is a fight one can have in their head. All day today I have been obsessing about stupid things. I have to learn how to put negative thoughts out of my head - and replace them with positive ones. It's hard to do all the time. I should try meditating -but I have a very busy head!

Instead trying not to think about negative things, observe them, realize how they appear in which form, in the form of thoughts, emotions, body sensations, images. Only after giving them attention, they will disappear. Your trying to avoid them will enforce them.

mirjana has point here.
There are no negative and positive thoughts. There are only just thoughts. Its there impact on our mental, physical or social constitution that categorize it as negative and positive. Just work every day to elevate your mind above all these nagging thoughts. When you are able to do so, you will begin to feel a sense of clarity and your mind will rise above the grasp of these thoughts.

I think part of my problem is that I care too much what people think. I cannot control their thoughts so I have to learn that those are their thoughts - not mine . They are simply things they may be trying to influence me with. I come by this honestly because my mother obsesses about everything and I can see that while I like to think I am "not" like my mother - this is one trait that I have inherited from her, along with a sense of guilt for things out of my control. Clarity should come if I practice that.
To quote one of the posters on here:
Who the hell is it you try to impress?
All you have to do is learn to care less!
It's beginning to look like this post should be part of the "Psychology" forum.

Lynda,
I just came across a poem, which reminded me of your first question here on DS.
I think you may like it.

Do not stand at my grave and weep
Written by Mary Elizabeth Frye in 1932

- Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am in a thousand winds that blow,
I am the softly falling snow.
I am the gentle showers of rain,
I am the fields of ripening grain.
I am in the morning hush,
I am in the graceful rush
Of beautiful birds in circling flight,
I am the starshine of the night.
I am in the flowers that bloom,
I am in a quiet room.
I am in the birds that sing,
I am in each lovely thing.
Do not stand at my grave bereft
I am not there. I have not left.
