Upcycling

Postby Sabina » Tue Feb 02, 2010 7:59 pm

Everyone knows of recycling and what it is, and the term upcycling is becoming increasingly more popular as well. Basically, you use waste materials to create something better out of them, or of higher value.

I thought of starting this as a topic and whenever any of us finds a nice example of upcycling, just throw it in here.

The first exhibit is of artistic nature... Sculptures made out of old rubber tires!

Making yarn from a tube of plastic, cotton or...

I find this idea very useful as it helps to make a yarn of almost everything and then to recycle it in many different ways following personal imagination and personal needs.

Here's some more upcycled art. These sculptures were born from Kris Kuksi and are created out of all kinds of discarded objects and materials.

Here are some awesome examples of art created by, well art... Through my journeys on the web i have come across many examples of thrown out cassettes and vinyl records being used for visual art instead of music.

Image

This is actually pretty easy and I have done it myself. The trick is to not burn your fingers on the hot record as you form it and to have your windows open as the melting vinyl can emit some fumes... for a step by step check it out here: http://www.casasugar.com/DIY-Rockin-Vinyl-Record-Bowl-388078

These are a little more complicated because it involved cutting the vinyl, something I haven't tackled yet.

This bracelet is made by Christine Claringbold. She does some amazing and beautiful things with vinyl. Check out her blog at: http://etsytrashion.blogspot.com/2008/08/eyepopart-upcycles-vinyl-with.html.

Here are some cassette tape portraits:

These were made by an artist named iri5. (i couldn't find her site)

And for those of us that are knitting inclined:
