Wangari Muta Maathai

There is a beautiful part of DS called Time Machinehttp://www.deepspirits.com/time-machine
DS team recommends us there to take a part in discussing the progress of humanity from ancient times until today, with personal choices of personalities which contributed or have been contributing to the development of human consciousness as shown in the Time Machine project.
My choice for this time is Wangari Muta Maathai.
Wangari Muta Maathai is a Kenyan environmental and political activist, the founder of the Green Belt Movement, an environmentalist, a civil society and women's rights activist, and a former parliamentarian.
Green Belt Movement is a non-profit grassroots non-governmental organization (NGO) based in Kenya, focused on the planting of trees, environmental conservation, and women's rights. Their mission is to mobilize community consciousness- using tree planting as an entry point- for self-determination, equity, improved livelihoods and security, and environmental conservation. Main goals are to strengthen and expand the Green Belt Movement in Kenya, to empower African, especially women and girls nurturing their leadership and entrepreneurial skills, to share GBM program with other countries in Africa and beyond and to advocate internationally for the environment, good governance, equity and cultures of peace.

In 1984, she was awarded the Right Livelihood Award, and in 2004, she became the first African woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize for “her contribution to sustainable development, democracy and peace.” She was an elected member of Parliament and Assistant Minister for Environment and Natural Resources in the government of President Mwai Kibaki between January 2003 and November 2005.
She is the author of four books, The Challenge for Africa, Unbowed: A Memoir, The Green Belt Movement: Sharing the Approach and the Experience, and Replenishing the Earth: Spiritual Values for Healing Ourselves and the World.
