The Obstacle on the Path

Postby Sabina » Mon Jan 18, 2010 5:32 am

In ancient times, a King had a boulder placed on a roadway.
Then he hid himself and watched to see if anyone would remove the huge rock.

Some of the king's wealthiest merchants and courtiers came by and simply walked around it.
Many loudly blamed the king for not keeping the roads clear, but none did anything about getting the stone out of the way.

Then a peasant came along carrying a load of vegetables.
Upon approaching the boulder, the peasant laid down his burden and tried to move the stone to the side of the road. After much pushing and straining, he finally succeeded.

After the peasant picked up his load of vegetables, he noticed a purse lying in the road where the boulder had been. The purse contained many gold coins and a note from the king indicating that the gold was for the person who removed the boulder from the roadway.

The lesson that this is meant to teach is that every obstacle presents an opportunity to improve our condition, but I think it points to something else that is also very important.
While others only criticized and in essence did nothing, the peasant took the situation into his own hands and changed it.

Imagine each and every one of us acting that way every day of our lives.

That's me...
:)

Here are a few quotations with the same message, more or less:

"The pessimist sees difficulty in every opportunity.
The optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.
"
Winston Churchill

"I have become my own version of an optimist.
If I can't make it through one door, I'll go through another door - or I'll make a door.
Something terrific will come no matter how dark the present.
"
Rabindranath Tagore

Specifically the quote by Tagore is proactive ("..or I'll make a door."). If you don't like something, then change it.. and so, I just added a new topic about Change and Fear in the Spirited Debate forum.
"Whether You believe you can, or you can't, you are right."

Right now in the jewelry industry it is all doom and gloom because of the economy and the sky rocketing price of gold. The same item that sold for $99 a year or two ago now cost $299, but I see the situation as an opportunity to think outside the box and find some new niches and I think I have found a good one.

I like the saying...... "Good luck is when preparation meets opportunity."

Sabina,

I like both quotes, but prefer Tagore´s because it shows the Way.

The Way
Do not observe your falling down,
Think to learn about flying
During falling create your wings
So that you can fly.
Even a fall can be flight.
