Dermot,

Can you illuminate us, or at least me, about Sinead O'Connor and the reaction to her coming on stage and all that?
My son got very upset about people's reactions while watching the video, by the way... 80|
I had no answers to provide any kind of clarification.

I found the following on here website...
[quote]She ripped up a picture of Pope John-Paul II on "Saturday Night Live" in 1992 to protest the Catholic Church's stance on issues such as abortion and divorce, then two weeks later was booed off the stage at a Bob Dylan tribute concert in New York City by a small but vocal group of protesters.

Oops....that probably was'nt very easy for him to listen to.

Sinead had torn up a poster of the Pope on some US tv show a short time before the concert.

She was trying to highlight 'abuse issues' relating to the Catholic church, which were being highlighted at that time.

There was a knee jerk reaction to her appearance at that show, which culminated in the booing etc at the concert.

Its all very ironic, and probably wouldnt have happened elsewhere. I know that she appeared on an Irish chat show and talked about the issue without the audience doing anything but applauding at the end.
She appears to be 'highly strung' but in my opinion i would say that she is genuine, which is as much as you can ask of anyone.
Even the Pope.

Hope he is ok with that, people dont always act with kindness, sadly.

Thank you for the added information Dermot, and you also Ryan.
He will be ok with that.. obviously I will first have to explain to him who the pope is and why people may have such strong reactions over someone ripping a poster or picture.
It is clearly because they have strong feelings about the non-sufficient use of the paper and the destruction of trees. Trees, paper, printed pictures. They should be cherished and not torn to pieces.

Seriously though, sometimes when you have to explain something to a child, you realize the full extent of the ridiculousness of what you are supposed to explain.
I know he would have an easier time understanding the trees & paper explanation. 80|

Yeah...good luck with the paper/trees approach!

I suppose i should have given an explanation for the 'Angry Music' heading?

Protest songs down through the years have been so powerful, highlighting injustice globally, allowing people to identify through the weight of their fears, pointing a finger at governments, asking for a better way.
Poetry with a punch, in lots of ways.
Consider Dylans Desolation Row, Blowin in the Wind, Maggies Farm, Idiot WInd, etc.

In fact Blowin in the Wind, and Times they are a Changin became anthems for civil rights and anti war movements.

One of the songs i posted was Tramp the Dirt Down by Elvis Costello.
This is a hugely caustic piece about the British prime minister of the time Maggie Thatcher, who was responsible in many peoples opinion for Britain becoming a very intolerant place to live.
But it was a song, and it encapsulated feeling, feeling which probably would not have been aired to an audience in any other way.

Sinead's song, if nothing else shows what its like to have to sometimes stand for what one believes in.

Morrissey is another singer who uses his platform to hit where it hurts.

Anyway....music is a powerful tool, it can uplift, it can kick the seat from under your comfortable a$$ ⊗, or it can be used to show love at its most delicate.

I am very upset too. =0( That shows where we are in everage. It is sad.
Thank you Dermot for both, for this video and for explanation. I love you for both.
The gesture of Chris Christopherson when coming to her and telling her not to let the bastards get her down and the way he introduced her , both have made me trembeling.
What a manifestation of ignorance. I admire her ability to say anything under the circumstances.

So glad to see you well, overcome them
Completely silent now
With heaven's help
You've cast your demons out
And not to pull your halo down
Around your neck and tug you off your cloud
But I'm more than just a little curious
How you're plannin' to go about makin' your amends
To the dead
To the dead

Recall the deeds as if they're all
Someone else's
Atrocious stories
Now you stand reborn
Before us all
So glad to see you well

And not to pull your halo down
Around your neck and tug you to the ground
But I'm more than just a little curious
How you're plannin' to go about makin' your amends
To the dead
To the dead

With your halo slippin' down
Your halo slippin'
Your halo slippin' down
Your halo slippin' down

Your halo slippin' down
(I'm more than just a little curious
How you're plannin' to go about makin' your amends)
[repeated]

Your halo slippin' down
Your halo's slippin' down to choke you now

I hesitated to post this video. It is a live recording and the sound quality is subpar, but I think that the video makes up for it. After reading the lyrics [below], I suspect that the song is about child abuse.

Most interesting is watching the expressions and body language of the lead singer. The level of intensity is not something I have ever seen in a performance so I encourage you to watch it.

Your Russia
medicine tongue and a heavy hand
together made a fist
they put me down and I do not rise
and now as an old child
I'll hand it down
I'll hand it down
then I blow around
see me blow around
just like dirty paper

medicine tongue and a heavy hand
together made a list
row on row
of cold and hardened hearts that wish
my weeds and flowers
would together both grow wild
from a distance
from a distance
they come up close to smile

medicine tongue and a heavy hand
together made a fist
they put me down and I do not rise
and now as an old child

far be it from me to take care
take care the words you say
in heart on new's day

by word of mouth
all young men do stagger
and all come to shambles by heart
saw your eyes wide and flashing
setting the woods on fire
breathing heavy dirt
beneath the skin of a liar
did I cross your heart
behind my back just then
I must push on hard
in prayer and take it by force
though you've said it
you say it better
with more conviction than I

medicine tongue and a heavy hand
together made a list
row on row
of cold and hardened hearts that wish
my weeds and flowers
would together both grow wild
from a distance
from a distance
they come up close to smile
