Death is not the end?

Postby dermot » Sun Jun 20, 2010 10:24 pm

Recently in my more distasteful moments i have been mulling over the soundtrack to my funeral.
Personally i dont actually intend to die, im expecting a reversal of the ageing process any decade now, ........but just in case, here's a musical take on my possible departure to a new and better place?

If i thought Kylie would sing for me ....i would personally throttle myself now.

Dear Dermot,
I have also had some thoughts in that direction and my choice will be between these songs.

Dermot, awesome topic!

When I was little I loved to create music tapes before every trip. There was always a new tape, a new compilation of music for any upcoming journey (which was usually by car).
That habit stayed with me... and I still love to do that.
So, I created a mini-playlist for this particular journey in response to this topic. Naturally, the order in which the music is played is always very important with these compilations.

Also, this would be the music I would select today, on this particular day.
The soundtracks from various Tomb Raider games fit in this case.
Tomorrow the entire compilation may be very different. That's a good thing.

When I die, I will be dead and possibly not be able to hear this music.
Possibly. I am aware of that.

This is a great topic, Dermot. I was talking with my brother a couple of years ago, after attending a friend's funeral, about what our musical dirges might be. I think the music chosen, for me, at least, isn't simply favorite songs, or spiritual or sad songs. For me, it's the music I would want my friends to associate with me, something in the song, something about it, fits some part of who I was or how my friends may think of and remember me. This, I guess, would be my own personal Soul music.

This song, I love to listen to it as a meditation, simply close my eyes, and free myself with the song. I feel my spirit cleansed while listening; I find comfort in the song and Deva's voice.

I sometimes wonder how my life would feel without this man's music; therefore, I can't imagine my death without it. There is something so, so special about the man and his music, truly ethereal.

This may seem a strange addition to this list, but this song has been my favorite since I was maybe 9 or 10. It's an absolutely wonderful song and a true part of who I feel I am.

Jim Croce has been my favorite since I was a kid. Everyone who knows me knows what his music means to me.

I add this last one for my Cherokee grandmother. I know this is supposed to be songs for me, songs that may make others think of me, but I could never go anywhere without my grandmother, at least thoughts of her. So, I'll take this one with me.

"Sometimes you do it to save your own life, not anybody else's. That's mostly why I write. I'm not trying to change anybody else's life or the world; I'm trying to keep from blowing my own brains out. That's the real point." -- Guy Clark

When I first replied to this topic, I thought of doing this like a soundtrack.. but picking out all the songs and finding all the videos would have taken days, so it became something else, something that matched my mood on that particular day.

Now is today.
If I had to pick one song, it would be this one:
Eddie Vedder: Long Nights

If I could add one more, definitely this one:
A Perfect Circle: Imagine

And this seems fitting, because it was the first music that ever meant something to me, as a child.
Ennio Morricone: Marco Polo (here with Yo Yo Ma)
