Assumptions & Clarifications

Postby Sabina » Wed Jan 13, 2010 4:21 am

A girl asked a boy if she was pretty.
He said no.

She asked him if he wanted to be with her forever.
He said no.

She then asked him if he would cry if she walked away.
He again said no.

She had heard too much.

She needed to leave.

As she walked away, he grabbed her arm and told her to stay, he said,
"You're not pretty, you're beautiful.
I don't want to be with you forever, I need to be with you forever.
I wouldn't cry if you walked away, I would die."

It's an illustration.
Assuming anything is bad.
If in doubt, ask for clarification.
If you care for someone, you might offer a clarification even if you haven't been asked, or at least not asked in words (as in the story above).
If you are asked to clarify, always do, and do so happily, because the reason someone asked you to clarify what you said is that they care enough for you to try to understand you.

Dear Sabina,

Thank you for this illuminating post,

It is beautiful how these two concepts of assumption and clarifications are presented.
It is not less beautiful how you explained the necessity of practising clarifications.

Practical application of this will be to copy this story and your words about it and keep it on the table as a permanent reminder. If we would be able to change our attitude in this, human relationships will fill this world with beauty.
